At the time of finding the recipe, I was already at the grocery store. I thought it would be simple to purchase missing ingredients from our pantry, and in no time, I would be drinking a mezcal mule. Negative. I spent 15 minutes looking for the passion fruit puree and agave nectar. Help was not easy to find either, the store was pretty busy. Before I gave up my craving of a fresh Mezcal mule, I spotted a store assistant. She was able to confirm the passion fruit puree was not available but the agave nectar was on aisle 16. I was so close to my mission…I was only missing one ingredient. Thinking that I was only one ingredient away from my desire, I thought to myself, “How difficult could it be to make passion fruit puree?” I walked back over to the fruit section, approached the young man organizing the strawberries, and asked him for the location of the passion fruit. He gracefully walked me over to the fruit and pointed it out to me. It was a done deal. I was stoked!

Who else pays close attention to the prices when the cashier is checking you out? I always do, I want to make sure the prices scan accordingly, especially sale prices. When the cashier scanned the passion fruit, it scanned for $8! I was shook, LOL! I kindly requested her to check again because the price I saw on the sign was $3.98. Long story short, I did not get the passion fruit, I got dragon fruit. Huge difference in price (and look).

I guess I should have mentioned to the young man the “passion fruit” he pointed me to did not match with the picture of passion fruit I found on google. And since I am not a shopper for either fruits, I did not think it was huge deal. At that point, I was just happy to know the fruit was in stock.

I ended up going with the dragon fruit and hoped for the best. As soon as I got home, I prepped all the ingredients to make the recipe. My husband comes out from the bedroom, realizes what I am doing, and says to me “I don’t know if the Mezcal is any good since the bottle was opened and it’s been a few years since it was purchased.” I was bummed. I spent about another 15 minutes trying to figure out if Mezcal expires. There was no reputable source I found stating whether or not it expires so I took my chances. I whipped up all the ingredients and it turned out to be delicious! In fact, I think I’ll be making a lot of Mezcal mules this summer. It’s refreshing, natural, and amazing in flavor.

Ingredients for Mezcal Mule:

  • 4 tablespoons of Mezcal
  • 6 tablespoons of ginger beer
  • 3 tablespoons of freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 1 tablespoon of dragon fruit puree
    • Blend 1/3 of the dragon fruit and voila!
  • 1 tablespoon of agave nectar
  • As many slices of cucumber (4 is my preferred quantity)
  • Ice

Steps on How to Make Mezcal Mule:

Step 1

Cut chunks of the dragon fruit and throw them into a blender to create the puree.

Step 2

Fill up the mixer with ice, about 3/4 full. Next, muddle the cucumber and agave nectar.

Step 3

Add the remaining ingredients and shake.

Pour the drink in a nice glass and enjoy!

Please share your comments if you make the recipe! I’d love to hear your feedback. It would be interesting to make the mule with passion fruit to see what the difference is, I’ll keep you posted!
