At least twice a year, I fill up bags of unused or unwanted clothes, shoes, and accessories, to either sell or donate. Today, on mrsprofresh.com, I am sharing how to declutter your closet by sharing the top tips I follow to help create a fresh space.
Before diving into the tips on how to declutter your closet, let me be real with you about a few things.
Cleaning out a closet is not an easy task. It can be overwhelming so arm yourself with a lot of patience. Also, expect to rollover some of the work to the next day. It is okay to start in segments, especially if you have a lot of things to sort through. That said, let’s get into the top tips on how to declutter your closet.
How to Declutter Your Closet
Tip #1: Schedule and Plan
I highly recommend and encourage you to schedule at least two times out of the year to declutter your closet. This way, you are being intentional about the task, and you can hold yourself accountable to get it done. I like to schedule my cleanouts around summer and wintertime.
Tip #2: Start the Sorting Process
Begin the sorting process by category. For example, begin with shoes first then move on to clothes. This way, you can start to feel accomplished by completing one category at a time. If you have not worn something in the last 12 months, it is probably time to give it up, especially if it no longer brings you joy.
Tip #3: Create Structure
After you’ve completed the sorting process, you can start by organizing your wardrobe, shoes, and accessories, by occasion. This is the best way to efficiently create order and structure in your closet. Not only will this approach help you plan outfits much easier, but it will also help you feel less overwhelmed the next time you declutter the space.
Tip #4: Prioritize Everyday Essentials
Along with creating structure, prioritize everyday wardrobe essentials. Once of the key things I strategically do is organize my everyday wardrobe essentials in easy-to-reach areas. For example, all of my undergarments, socks, etc., are stored in low, easy-to-reach drawers. And anything that is out of season is stored away in top shelves, or hard-to-reach drawers.
Tip #5: Use Organizational Tools
There are a lot of organizational tools and hardware to help you keep your space nice and tidy. Use those tools to your advantage to help customize and personalize your space. For example, you can install hooks to hang scarves, belts, etc.
Tip #6: Maintain the Space
One of the ways I help maintain some kind of order in my closet is by having a dedicated box (or bag) of clothes (or items) that I would like to either donate or sell. As time goes on, you will find yourself cleaning out the space little by little, which is a nice technique to help stay on top of your closet space.

If you really want to go all in and adopt new ways of decluttering, I highly recommend to read “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up“ by Marie Kondo. This book really helped me finetune my skills and taught me a lot about how to fold my clothes, haha!
