Our Christmas in Colorado (2025): A Cozy Holiday Recap

christmas in colorado 2025

Christmas in Colorado has a way of slowing time for us. Our 2025 trip felt like a cozy page from my travel diary, familiar, comforting, and quietly magical. It was a different way to spend the holidays, away from home, but one that felt grounding in all the right ways.

This was our most recent Christmas in Colorado, and instead of approaching it as a packed itinerary, it unfolded more like a collection of moments – some planned, some spontaneous, all memorable. If you’re planning your own trip and want the logistics, I’ve kept our full Christmas in Colorado itinerary updated here, but this post is all about the experience itself.

Dreaming of a White Christmas

There is something about the idea of a white Christmas that pulls us west every winter. It is less about a specific place and more about the feeling, stepping away from everyday noise into colder air, quieter mornings, and the kind of winter that feels distinctly seasonal. That longing is what usually leads us to Colorado or Utah, places where Christmas feels slower and more aligned with how we imagine the holiday should feel.

This year was a little different. Despite dreaming of snow all season, we arrived to a winter that was lighter than expected. Colorado, like much of the country, experienced a lack of snowfall, which oddly made it easier to accept. It was not just us missing the snow, it was happening everywhere. And while the white Christmas we envisioned did not fully materialize, the trip still delivered what we were really after, space to breathe, time to slow down, and a holiday rhythm that felt intentional rather than rushed.

Where We Stayed This Time

This past year, we opted for a cabin that could comfortably fit all nine of us, six adults and three children. We were intentional about choosing a home that felt truly livable for a group that size, complete with thoughtful amenities like fireplaces throughout the common areas, a dining table large enough for everyone to gather around, a relaxing hot tub, and a kitchen with ample space to cook and move around. We also wanted the home to reflect a true mountain aesthetic while still embracing the warmth of the holiday season.

Surrounded by expansive views, the floor-to-ceiling windows quickly became the heart of the home. Even without watching snow fall outside, the cozy common spaces more than made up for it, especially during meaningful moments spent around the fireplace and slowing down together.

The home itself featured four bedrooms and more bathrooms than we could count. Hosting a large group felt effortless. The kitchen was equipped with every imaginable cooking utensil, plenty of dishes for hosting, and an impressive collection of wine glasses, which only added to the ease and enjoyment of being together. The covered patio was everything and more, furnished with the prettiest campfire setup, outdoor heaters, a dining table, a BBQ grill, and comfortable seating. Every detail felt intentionally designed with a large group in mind, and it created an unforgettable experience for all of us.

Highlights From Our 2025 Trip

Some trips blur together. This one did not.

On our first full day in Colorado, we spent the day on the slopes, and it quickly became one of the most memorable parts of the trip. Watching the family learn how to ski was special on its own, but seeing the little ones experience it for the first time was something else entirely. We hovered nearby while they were at ski school, pretending not to watch every move, and laughing to ourselves when we caught them sneaking bites of snow, thinking they were being slick. That moment alone is a forever core memory.

Some of my other favorite moments came from Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. There was nothing overly planned or rushed, just cozy days centered around being together and making the holiday feel special for the kids. After all, it is our responsibility now to create that magic for them, and this year felt like a meaningful step into that role.

Christmas Eve was spent creating beautiful spreads and soaking up the warmth of the home. The evening would not have felt complete without attending mass and grounding the holiday in its true meaning, followed by a relaxed night back at the house preparing a delicious steak dinner together.

Christmas Day was filled with joy in the simplest way. Ellie the elf wrapped up her 2025 tour and surprised the little ones with gifts, and watching their faces light up with excitement and innocence was easily one of the highlights of the entire trip.

Another standout moment came from standing in line for nearly two hours just to try the viral hot chocolate in Breckenridge at Mountain Top Hot Chocolate Shop. I am not typically someone who loves sweets, but this one was genuinely worth the wait. It struck the perfect balance, rich without being overwhelming, and nothing like the watered-down hot chocolate you often find elsewhere. Highly recommend.

If I had to sum it all up, this trip felt deeply Christmas not because of decorations or events, but because of how present it allowed us to be.

What Felt Different This Time

What felt most different this year was who we were sharing it with. For the first time in over ten years, all of the siblings spent Christmas together. It was our first Christmas with my brother and his family since he got married, and the first time we had all been together for the holiday in a very long time. Experiencing Christmas in Colorado with everyone together gave the trip a deeper meaning, one that lingered throughout the week.

We also waited until the very last minute to book activities, which meant we were left with just one planned ski day. Ironically, it worked out perfectly. With the lack of snow this season, many experiences ended up getting canceled anyway, including the sleigh ride and dog sled tour we had really hoped to do. Hearing that made us feel oddly relieved, as if the trip was gently nudging us toward a slower pace all along.

In the end, less was more. What mattered most this year was not doing everything, but being fully present in each moment. When Jose and I spend the holidays at home, we often find ourselves bouncing between families, trying to be in the right place at the right time, which usually means celebrating Christmas three different ways. As meaningful as that time is, it can also pull us out of the moment, replacing stillness with schedules and logistics.

This trip offered something different. There was less hopping around and more staying put, less planning and more letting the days unfold naturally. It felt like a reflection of this season of life, and honestly, it suited us perfectly.

What We’d Do Again and What We’d Skip

If there’s one thing this trip reinforced, it’s that not everything needs to be packed into the schedule for it to feel meaningful.

Next time, we would book key activities in advance, especially the ones that tend to fill up quickly around the holidays. That said, this trip was also a reminder of how unpredictable winter weather can be. Even with the best planning, so much is ultimately in Mother Nature’s hands, and this year proved that not everything unfolds as expected, no matter how early you book.

What we would absolutely do again is lean into a slower, home-centered holiday. Choosing a place that comfortably fit everyone, prioritizing shared meals, and leaving space for unplanned moments made the experience feel effortless. Staying put, lingering over coffee in the mornings, and letting the days take their own shape is something I would not change.

If anything, this trip confirmed that Christmas does not need to be busy to be memorable. Sometimes the most special moments happen when you give yourself permission to do less and simply be together.
