As someone who had tried snowboarding before without lessons, I wanted to see if formal instruction would make a difference – and spoiler alert – it did!

Why I Decided to Take Snowboarding Lessons in Colorado

Before sharing the details of my experience, let me provide a little backstory. I attempted to snowboard twice before lessons. My first experience was rough – I spent more time falling than enjoying the slopes. The second time was better, but I was still stuck on the bunny hill. (The bunny hill is an easy slope for beginner skiers or snowboarders.)

This time, I decided to book lessons to find out if learning with an instructor could transform my experience. I was determined to form my own opinion whether snowboarding lessons in Colorado were worth it or not.

I booked my lesson through Breckenridge.com. The class, called the Adult AM+PM Bundle Group Snowboard Lesson, included both morning and afternoon sessions.

• Morning Session: 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
• Afternoon Session: 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.
• Lunch Break: One hour in between

I chose the Beaver Run location, which included a one-day lift pass, and gear rental. The rental equipment (snowboard, boots, and helmet) made it easy to pack light so def recommend to do the same.

Prices vary dependent upon the season and day. Below is an estimate of the cost breakdown:

• AM + PM Lesson, Lift Pass, and Gear: $405
• Parking at Beaver Run Resort: $35 for the day

Parking Tip

If you book lessons at Beaver Run, arrive early for parking. I parked at the Beaver Run Resort & Conference Center (620 Village Rd, Breckenridge, CO 80424), which had plenty of spots available when I arrived at 8:15 a.m.

Was the lesson worth it? My Verdict

Let’s just say that by the end of the day, I accomplished so much more than I expected:

• I could stop and stand without falling.
• I learned to control my speed (still working on my confidence to go fast).
• I successfully maneuvered around people on the slopes.
• I managed to go down the hill backward – yes, backward! eek!!!
• I even filmed while snowboarding – wild, right? haha

My instructors, Peter and Robbin, were incredibly helpful. They taught the basics, like how to position your snowboard while resting and how to get up using your knees. These small tips made a huge difference and gave me the confidence to fully enjoy the experience.

I would consider another lesson since I didn’t get to learn how to turn.

• Lift Pass Access: Your lift pass is valid for the entire day, so you can practice after your lesson ends.
• Have Fun: Remember, everyone starts as a beginner. Embrace the experience, laugh at yourself, and enjoy the journey! Everyone sucks at first.

Things I Loved About the Lesson

After taking my first snowboarding lesson, I can confidently say that I graduated from the bunny hill! I couldn’t be happier with the results. Below is what I loved about my snowboarding lesson in Colorado:

1. Instructors: Robbin, my morning instructor, had a great teaching style that helped me visualize techniques. Peter, my afternoon instructor, was patient and kind.
2. Skill Progression: I learned valuable techniques and now feel ready to move beyond the bunny hill.

While not everyone needs to complete all 12 levels to enjoy the slopes, it’s great to know there’s a clear path for progression.
